Job summary

Metro YMCAs in Newton, NJ seeks a Junior Camp Counselor to assist senior staff in supervising campers, guiding activities, and fostering a safe, supportive camp environment.

You will help children adjust to camp, greet campers warmly, and build positive relationships with families while upholding YMCA core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility. This seasonal role supports diverse camp activities and safety protocols.

Qualifications

• Basic understanding of youth development principles.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with all levels including staff, parents and staff.
• 1-3 years’ experience leading and supervising group activities.
• Ability to relate to children and develop professional, positive relationships with youth.
• First Aid, CPR and AED certification may be required.

Responsibilities

• Supervise campers in dining hall and cabin settings.
• Assist Campers keeping them focused and engaged in camp activities; respond to campers' needs.
• Assist all counselors during activity periods, keeping all campers engaged.
• Learn Camper’s names and greet campers with respect and enthusiasm.
• Develop positive relationships with families and learn why they come to our Y.
• Be knowledgeable regarding the Annual Campaign and its purpose.
• Encourage camper’s youth development progress.
• Follow all sign-in/sign-out policies and procedures; ensure attendance records.
• Uphold the YMCA four core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility.
