Job summary

Calvert County Public Schools seeks a Special Education Teacher (Itinerant) for Infant–Grade 3, full time. Under direction of the school principal and the supervisor of special education, you will plan and provide specially designed instruction and develop IEPs to meet diverse student needs.

You will travel between 2–3 schools to support early childhood general education programs and collaborate with families and staff.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated ability in written and oral communication.
• Understanding of and ability to maintain rapport with persons from diverse, cultural, ethnic, and racial groups.
• Working knowledge of current classroom technology.
• Knowledge of disabilities and evidence-based practices and strategies for working with students with disabilities.
• Knowledge of and ability to administer and/or interpret educational assessment instruments/results.
• Knowledge of special education regulations and the IEP process.
• Ability to write appropriate IEPs and design and deliver specially designed instruction.
• Knowledge of the general education curriculum and the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards.
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills when working with diverse groups (parents, other professionals, students, teachers, administrators, community agency representatives.)
• Ability to interpret data to adjust instruction, write appropriate goals and objectives and/or communicate appropriate progress.
• Demonstrated success in accomplishing tasks akin to the responsibilities listed below.

Responsibilities

• Plans and provides specially designed instruction, supports, and services for students with disabilities.
• Develops appropriate IEPs to meet academic, behavioral, social and emotional needs of students.
• Creates a classroom environment that makes space for student voice and is safe for learning.
• Develops classroom routines and utilizes proactive strategies to manage conflict and redirect behavior.
• Maintains order and discipline in the classroom conducive to learning and safety.
• Plan and prepare lessons aligned with Calvert County curricula and learning goals.
• Incorporate research-based strategies and instructional technology within the learning process.
• Develops and modifies instructional plans to meet all students' needs regardless of background or abilities.
• Completes paperwork related to the IEP process in a timely manner.
• Monitors and evaluates student progress using formative and summative assessment and IEP data.
• Prepares, administers, and corrects evaluations and records results for IEPs.
• Stays current with trends, research, and methodology in instructional techniques and cultural responsiveness.
• Plans assignments for instructional assistants and volunteers.
• Plans for IEP implementation with instructional assistants and general education teachers.
• Maintains records and follows procedures.
• Communicates with students, parents, staff and community.
• Serves as an IEP team member and case manager for designated students.
• Conferences with parents and students regarding progress; participates in meetings as needed.
• Attends staff meetings and required trainings.
• Supervises students in various settings and serves on special committees.
• Attends events such as open house and registration nights.
