Job summary

The State of Alaska is seeking an IT System Administrator 1 in Fairbanks to provide daily support for file and print servers, manage Active Directory tasks, and deploy Group Policy Objects. The role requires traveling to remote sites and working within a dynamic, security-conscious government IT environment.

Minimum qualifications emphasize competency-based KSAs in hardware, infrastructure design, operating systems, and systems integration. Alaska residency is required for consideration.

Qualifications

• Hardware: Knowledge of specifications, uses, and types of computer or computer-related equipment.
• Infrastructure Design: Knowledge of the architecture and typology of software, hardware, and networks, including LANS, WANS, and telecommunications systems, their components and associated protocols and standards, and how they operate and integrate with one another and with associated controlling software.
• Operating Systems: Knowledge of computer network, desktop, and mainframe operating systems and their applications.
• Systems Integration: Knowledge of the principles, methods, and procedures for installing, integrating, and optimizing information systems components.

Responsibilities

• Provide daily support for site file and print servers, ensuring reliable access, routine maintenance, prompt issue resolution, and traveling to remote sites as needed to address on-premises issues.
• Perform core Active Directory tasks—including account maintenance, group membership updates, and basic directory troubleshooting—while using PowerShell to streamline repetitive operations.
• Author, test, and deploy user and computer Group Policy Objects (GPOs) to support secure and consistent configurations across the environment.
• Assist with entry-level datacenter administration such as basic server provisioning, hardware handling, system monitoring, and performing scripted tasks with PowerShell.
• Support WAN network operations by helping plan, deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot Ethernet and Wi-Fi infrastructure, including hands-on work at remote sites to ensure stable network connectivity.
