Job summary

NC State University’s CVM Teaching Hospital seeks an Internal Medicine Veterinary Technician to join a busy academic clinical service in Raleigh, NC. You will work closely with veterinary students, clinicians, and clients to ensure high-quality patient care from admission to discharge.

Required are a completed accredited veterinary technician program or equivalent, and strong teamwork under a hospital setting.

Qualifications

• Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Responsibilities

• Partner directly with clients for seamless patient check-ins, admissions, scheduling, and compassionate updates.
• Master service-specific cases with veterinary students and clinicians on problems, diagnostics, treatment protocols, and care plans.
• Execute and support diagnostic tests and procedures, including anesthesia monitoring and routine bloodwork.
• Prepare patients for procedures with aseptic technique and maintain sterile environment.
• Deliver high-level patient care: monitor vitals, venipuncture, IV catheters, wound care, and sedation therapies.
• Perform drug calculations, CRIs, IV fluids, analgesia, and antibiotic administrations.
• Provide post-anesthesia recovery care and manage pain.
• Monitor patients with complex diseases and use imaging modalities with teams.
• Lift up to 50 lbs as needed.
• Record and communicate data in hospital information systems.
• Assist in teaching veterinary students and residents.

Direct Patient Care & Clinical Excellence

• Partner directly with clients for seamless patient check-ins, admissions, scheduling, and compassionate updates.
• Master service-specific cases by collaborating closely with veterinary students and clinicians on presenting problems, diagnostics, treatment protocols, and comprehensive care plans.
• Execute and support specialized diagnostic tests and advanced procedures, including endoscopy prep, routine bloodwork, and dedicated anesthesia monitoring.
• Prepare patients for procedures using expert aseptic techniques (clipping, prepping, scrubbing, and draping) while maintaining a pristine, sterile environment during routine and surgical interventions.
• Deliver high-level patient care and treatments: monitor TPR and blood pressure, perform venipuncture, place IV catheters and NE tubes, apply bandaging, and administer targeted sedative/treatment therapies.
• Perform accurate moderate-risk drug calculations, including CRIs, IV fluids, pain management protocols, and antibiotic administrations.
• Provide attentive post-anesthesia and post-sedation recovery care, prioritizing pain management for elective and specialized procedures.
• Monitor patients with complex disease processes, including diabetes, infectious diseases, endocrine conditions, and GI, renal, liver, hematological, and respiratory disorders.
• Utilize specialized patient care equipment with confidence, including IV fluid pumps, pulse oximeters, BP monitors, and syringe pumps.
• Collaborate fluidly with advanced diagnostic imaging groups, including CT, MRI, ultrasound, and radiography.
• Comfortably lift up to 50 lbs with or without reasonable accommodation.

Workflow, Teaching & Departmental Coordination

• Drive exceptional client and referring veterinarian (rDVM) satisfaction by facilitating clear communication, anticipating needs, and coordinating services for seamless overall patient care.
• Accurately record and communicate patient data, diagnostics, and care plans using modern hospital information systems.
• Inspire the next generation of veterinary professionals by orienting, teaching, and coaching new staff, veterinary students, interns, and residents on hospital policies and patient care.
• Maintain an exemplary clinical environment by adhering to hospital cleanliness standards, infectious disease protocols, OSHA, EHS, and radiation safety guidelines.

Other Responsibilities

• Apply full knowledge of veterinary medicine to perform procedures and tests (administers intravenous, inhalant and oral medicines, catheterizations, etc) in support of patient care.
• Demonstrate knowledge of safe restraint, blood collection and other diagnostic procedures.
• Apply full knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
• Apply full knowledge and skills to operate, adjust and calibrate standard instrumentation and equipment as needed (Doppler, ECG, etc).
• Utilize full knowledge of infection control procedures.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience as a veterinary technician in a clinical setting; preferably at a teaching hospital.
• Experience assisting with advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, such as endoscopy, ultrasound, CT, MRI, or anesthesia monitoring.
• Experience utilizing veterinary electronic medical records and advanced patient monitoring equipment to document and manage complex patient care.

Required License or Certification

• Licensed/Registered/Certified by any state
• Graduation from an AVMA fully accredited two- or four-year Veterinary Technician program

Valid NC Driver's License required
