Job description

Interim Director of Nursing Strategy & Development
Reports to: Chief Nursing Officer
Duration- 4 - 6 Months
Location: Unites States of America
(100% Virtual )

Our client is a large, rapidly growing and evolving healthcare organization delivering home infusion and clinic-based services across a geographically dispersed patient population. As the organization continues to grow and modernize, it is looking to add an experienced Interim Director of Nursing to provide additional leadership capacity and capability during a critical period of transition.

Working closely with the Chief Nursing Officer, this individual will effectively serve as a senior extension of the CNO, providing additional leadership horsepower and an objective perspective on the quality, capability and scalability of the nursing organization.

This is not simply a traditional nursing operations role. The opportunity is to help the organization understand where it is today, where it needs to go next and what leadership capabilities, operating structures, data, processes and disciplines will be required to get there.

Central to the mandate will be ensuring the organization can continue to deliver an exceptional and consistent patient experience at scale, regardless of where patients are being served.

The Mandate

The Interim Director of Nursing will provide senior-level oversight and support across the nursing organization, with a particular focus on:

Quality, Data & Operational Insight:
  • Bring greater data-driven visibility into nursing operations, quality and patient service, helping the organization better understand performance across a dispersed care delivery model.
  • Assess the effectiveness and consistency of care delivery across home infusion and clinic-based environments, identifying variation, risk, capacity constraints and opportunities for improvement.
  • Help develop and strengthen meaningful quality, operational and workforce metrics that allow leadership to identify trends, anticipate issues and make better-informed decisions.
  • Use data and analytics to evaluate areas such as quality outcomes, patient experience, workforce capacity, productivity, service levels and consistency of care.
  • Help the organization better understand whether its current nursing resources, structures and processes can effectively meet demand as volumes and geographic reach continue to grow.
  • Create greater transparency and accountability around performance, ensuring nursing leadership is increasingly able to move from reactive management toward proactive, data-informed decision-making.
Leadership & Talent Development:
  • Conduct an objective assessment of the current nursing leadership team, organizational capabilities and talent, identifying strengths as well as opportunities for development.
  • Work alongside existing leaders to understand not simply how they are performing today, but the capabilities they will need to lead a larger, more sophisticated organization in the future.
  • Provide hands-on coaching, mentoring and development to nursing leaders, helping them broaden their leadership capability, strengthen decision-making and increase their organizational impact.
  • Help leaders transition from managing day-to-day operations toward taking greater ownership for quality, performance, people development, capacity and continuous improvement.
  • Identify opportunities to clarify roles, accountabilities and decision rights so that leadership capability can scale alongside organizational growth.
  • Build capability within the existing team wherever possible, while providing objective insight into where additional or different capabilities may ultimately be required.
Future-State Nursing Operations:
  • Partner with the CNO to define the future-state nursing operating model, including organizational structure, leadership accountabilities and the appropriate balance of centralized and distributed capabilities.
  • Strengthen the policies, processes, procedures and operating disciplines required to deliver greater consistency and scalability.
  • Ensure that nursing operations can continue to support growth without compromising quality, safety or patient experience.
  • Help create the organizational capacity needed to support continued growth, modernization and increased complexity.
  • Leave behind a stronger and more sustainable nursing organization, with better-developed leaders and greater visibility into performance.
The Ideal Interim Leader

The successful candidate will be an accomplished healthcare leader who can operate comfortably at the intersection of clinical quality, people leadership, operations and data.

Experience within home infusion, infusion clinics, home care, ambulatory care, acute care or geographically dispersed clinical operations would translate particularly well.

We are looking for someone who brings:
  • Significant senior nursing or clinical operations leadership experience.
  • An RN designation is highly desirable, although the depth and relevance of operational leadership experience will also be important.
  • Strong experience using data and analytics to understand quality, capacity and operational performance and translate insights into action.
  • Experience leading complex or dispersed clinical operations where consistency of quality and patient experience must be maintained across multiple locations or care settings.
  • A demonstrated ability to assess, coach and develop leadership talent, building capability rather than simply directing activity.
  • Experience helping leadership teams evolve as their organizations become larger, more sophisticated and more complex.
  • Experience designing or evolving organizational structures, operating models, policies, processes and performance disciplines.
  • A strong understanding of the relationship between workforce capacity, patient demand, clinical quality and service delivery.
  • The ability to lead with empathy, credibility and curiosity, while still being comfortable challenging the status quo when required.
  • The ability to work effectively in a 100% virtual, geographically dispersed environment.
Leadership Style:

The right individual will bring the experience and perspective of a senior nursing executive while remaining highly collaborative, developmental and hands-on.

They will be comfortable coming into a successful organization that has grown quickly, listening and learning first, and then providing the CNO with an objective perspective on quality of the operation, the quality and capacity of the leadership team, and the organization's readiness for its next stage of growth.

Importantly, this is not an assignment focused on replacing the existing team. It is about helping that team evolve.

The successful interim will coach and stretch current leaders, help them develop the capabilities required for the future and create the structures, information and operating disciplines that allow them to lead increasingly complex operations with confidence.

Ultimately, the interim's legacy should be a stronger leadership bench, a more sophisticated and data-driven nursing operation, and a scalable model capable of delivering an exceptional patient experience as the organization continues to grow.
