Job summary

Houston Methodist is seeking an Inpatient Coder to ensure accurate ICD-10-PCS/ICD-10-CM coding for inpatient encounters, adhering to coding guidelines and regulatory requirements. The role emphasizes collaboration with the coding team and healthcare stakeholders to maintain data integrity in the EMR.

The coder will utilize encoder software and EPIC/EHR systems, query physicians as needed, and uphold AHIMA standards while maintaining high productivity and quality in a non-exempt FLSA environment.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree or higher in a CAHIIM accredited program or equivalent experience.
• One year of inpatient coding experience or completion of Houston Methodist Coding Apprentice Program.
• RHIT, RHIA, or CCS certification required.

Responsibilities

• Interact with coding team and stakeholders.
• Provide feedback during coding section meetings and education, and assist others as needed.
• Respond to internal and external customer requests and review coded accounts for accuracy.
• Initiate physician queries to obtain or clarify diagnoses/procedures using established processes.
• Maintain high coding quality by assigning accurate ICD-10-CM/PCS codes per policy and guidelines.
• Abstract data accurately in the encoder/EHR and ensure correct physician identification and procedure dates.
