Job summary

BJC HealthCare is hiring an Inpatient Coder I. This entry level role requires one of the following certifications: CCS, CCA, RHIA or RHIT. The position emphasizes accurate data abstraction, up‑to‑date knowledge of coding guidelines, and timely, compliant DRG assignments.

The role supports collaboration across departments to ensure the integrity of medical records and coding compliance, while staying current with regulatory changes and code updates. Prior experience is not required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• No experience required.
• CCS or CCA or RHIA or RHIT certification required.

Responsibilities

• Accurately abstracts data elements as required.
• Stays current of changes in coding conventions and guidelines.
• Reviews patient encounters for compliant coding.
• Queries provider for clarification when needed.
• Assigns codes in a timely manner.
• Assesses documentation for appropriate DRG assignment.
• Collaborates with CDI, HIM Operations and other departments to ensure coding integrity.
