Job summary

BJC HealthCare is hiring an Inpatient Coder I. This entry level role requires one of the following certifications: CCS, CCA, RHIA or RHIT. The coder will assign inpatient codes in line with regulatory guidelines and collaborate with CDI/HIM teams to ensure accurate documentation.

The position supports inpatient coding activities, with responsibilities including data abstraction, DRG evaluation and timely code assignment in accordance with hospital guidance.

Qualifications

• Entry level role with no prior experience required.
• Must hold CCS, CCA, RHIA or RHIT certification.

Responsibilities

• Accurately abstracts data elements for inpatient encounters.
• Stays current with coding conventions, guidelines, code updates and internal guidance.
• Reviews and analyzes patient encounters for compliant coding.
• Queries providers for clarification as needed.
• Assigns codes accurately and timely.
• Interprets documentation for appropriate DRG assignment.
• Collaborates with CDI, HIM Operations and other departments to ensure record integrity and coding compliance.
