Job summary

UW Medicine is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician to join the Microbiology Team at the Renton Central Laboratory. The MLT will perform routine testing, prepare specimens, and support laboratory operations under supervision.

Responsibilities include quality control, troubleshooting, training staff, and contributing to the development of new processes. The role requires a two-year laboratory science program and a certified technologist credential.

Qualifications

• Completion of a two-year program in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology is required.
• Technician-level certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent is required.
• Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements.

Responsibilities

• Process patient, proficiency, and environmental specimens for analysis, including identification, preparation, and incubation.
• Perform patient and proficiency tests following SOPs and established policies.
• Input and verify test results in the laboratory information system and report critical values per protocol.
• Conduct routine quality control and preventative maintenance; troubleshoot issues with proper documentation.
• Assist in training employees, post-doctoral fellows, residents, and students; provide timely evaluation feedback.
• Participate in developing and evaluating new processes and procedures.

Job description

The UW Medicine - Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology (DLMP) in Renton, WA has a fantastic opportunity for a Medical Laboratory Technician with the Microbiology Team at the Renton Central Laboratory.

Under general supervision, the Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) performs, at a technical level, various routine laboratory testing and/or prepares or sets up specimens for laboratory testing. Additionally, the MLT performs other laboratory work that supports the operations of the clinical laboratory, including training others in basic laboratory skills, verifying the quality of reagents and media, and working on routinely assigned special projects that contribute to the development of new processes and procedures.

• Six (6) month appointment
• Tuesday - Saturday
• Day shift

What you’ll contribute:

• Correctly process patient, proficiency, and environmental specimens for analysis. This includes specimen identification, appropriate orders, assessment for acceptability or rejection, specimen preparation/concentration, media/smear inoculation, incubation, storage, etc.
• Perform patient and proficiency tests without errors by following SOPs as identified by current policies and procedures for the areas trained. This includes specimen Gram stains, specimen testing with kits or molecular platforms, specimen AFB stains, etc.
• Utilize information management systems to accession, status, verify, and reject orders. Correctly input test results using the laboratory information system.
• Report critical values, STAT results, courtesy notifications, and routine results according to established protocols, ensuring turn-around times are consistent with guidelines and documentation is complete.
• Perform and document routine quality control and preventative maintenance according to established protocols.
• Demonstrate the knowledge and judgment needed to recognize problems associated with patient testing, quality control, and preventative maintenance. Possess basic troubleshooting skills and corrects problems with proper documentation. Notify appropriate personnel when unable to correct a problem.
• Assist with the instruction and training of employees, post-doctoral fellows, residents, medical students, medical technology students, etc. Provide evaluation feedback in a timely manner.
• Assist in the development and evaluation of new processes and/or procedures and participate in improving current processes.
• Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care or other services based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate to the age of the patient.
• Performs related duties as required.

What you’ll need:

Completion of a two-year program in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology AND Technician-level certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent certifying organization.

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.
