Are you passionate about helping children learn, grow, and succeed? The YMCA is seeking caring, dependable, and enthusiastic Assistant Teachers to join our early childhood education team. This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy building positive relationships, facilitating learning through play and structured activities, and contributing to a safe, nurturing classroom environment.
As an Assistant Teacher, you will work closely with Lead Teachers to implement age-appropriate lessons, encourage development across social, emotional, physical, and cognitive domains, and support daily routines that foster belonging and curiosity. You will gain hands‑on experience in classroom management, child observation, and family communication while engaging in meaningful work that strengthens children, families, and communities.
Support the delivery of high-quality childcare and educational programs aligned with YMCA standards. Encourage children's development through intentional, positive interactions and engaging activities. Assist with planning and implementing age-appropriate lessons and learning experiences. Create and maintain a safe, nurturing, and welcoming classroom and outdoor environment. Build trusting relationships with children, families, and fellow staff members. Maintain compliance with YMCA policies, licensing requirements, and Step Up to Quality standards. Assist with meal and snack planning in accordance with CACFP guidelines. Help maintain organized, clean and engaging classroom spaces. Communicate observations, concerns, and developmental progress with Lead Teachers and families. Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities offered by the YMCA.
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required. Minimum of 2 years of experience working with children and/or in a customer service environment. Must be at least 18 years of age. Strong understanding of child development and age-appropriate interactions. Excellent communication and relationship-building skills. Ability to work effectively with children, families, and colleagues from diverse backgrounds. Basic computer proficiency and willingness to complete required documentation. Current First Aid, CPR, Child Abuse Prevention, and Communicable Disease certifications, or willingness to obtain within 90 days of hire.
