Job summary

The University of Idaho seeks an Academic Retention Specialist to provide direct service to students through the Tribal Nations Student Affairs (TNSA) office and support the INSTEP program. The role collaborates with Advising Services, Student Support Services, Counseling and Testing Center, and other departments to help students stay on track to complete their undergraduate degrees.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree required.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.
• Ability to work nonstandard hours including evenings and weekends.
• Ability to travel for academic programming and professional development including overnight stays.

Responsibilities

• Meeting students on a regular basis to monitor academic progress.
• Assessing and coordinating academic tutoring opportunities for students.
• Overseeing daily study tables.
• Guiding and mentoring students in exploration of their choice of majors and coursework.
• Advising and mentoring students on personal, financial, social, tribal and academic related matters.
• Researching scholarship and internship opportunities.
• Co-teaching the TNSA Fall seminar course.
• Collaborating with university resources and personnel to provide students with comprehensive and appropriate services.
• Working with Indigenous populations in higher education or student service programs.
• One year working with students in a mentoring, advising, or other college level academic support role.
• Using a computer for word processing, email, calendar management and internet searches.
• Maintaining a high level of confidentiality.
