Job summary

Lutheran Community Services NW seeks an immigration attorney to provide direct representation before the Immigration Court and USCIS, screen and advise clients, and develop case strategies. You will maintain up-to-date knowledge of immigration law while supporting staff on asylum and related matters.

The role involves case tracking, outreach, and collaboration across teams to serve low-income and diverse immigrant communities with dignity and respect.

Qualifications

• 2 years of related experience in Immigration Law.
• Juris Doctor degree and admission to any US state bar in good standing.
• Credentials may be required depending on program or location requirements.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct representation to clients before the Immigration Court and USCIS.
• Develop and litigate cases, including legal research and case strategy.
• Maintain knowledge of significant policies, laws, and trends in immigration law.
• Provide case support to staff on asylum and related matters.
• Perform administrative tasks such as case tracking and management.

HOW YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACT:

All LCSNW team members will contribute to our mission of partnering with individuals, families, and communities for health, justice, and hope.

This position will provide direct legal representation to low-income and culturally diverse immigrants pursuing various forms of immigration relief with Portland U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

The immigration attorney performs client screening and intake, including determining eligibility for relief and providing immigration advice:

• Provide direct representation to clients before the Immigration Court and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services
• Develop and litigate cases, including legal research and developing case strategy
• Maintain a working knowledge of significant policies, laws, and trends in immigration law
• Provide case support to other staff members on asylum and related matters
• Perform related administrative tasks, such as case tracking and management
• Participate in LCSNW’s outreach and development efforts

HOW YOU WILL BE A GREAT FIT:

• 2 years of related experience; specific to Immigration Law
• Juris Doctor degree, admission to any state bar in the US, and be in good standing
• Credentials may be required depending on individual program or location requirements.
• Fluency in English, both spoken and written.
• Intermediate mastery of business applications and productivity suites
• Demonstrates resilience, awareness, and self-regulation in navigating challenges, conflicts, and obstacles/barriers.
• Thrives in a diverse and multicultural environment; works with cross-functional teams to develop and implement strategies to enhance end-user experiences throughout the service lifecycle
• Demonstrates exceptional commitment to serving and advocating for diverse and marginalized populations
• Completes tasks in a moderately noisy environment
• Interacts with others and performs tasks in-person and using technology, with moderate periods of stationary activity and minimal periods of increased physical activity, including and not limited to general office tasks
• Moves equipment/materials weighing up to 15 pounds
• Travels between worksites occasionally
• Works in a variety of settings, including and not limited to LCSNW office locations, partner agencies, and community-based settings, courts, and faith-based settings such as churches
• Meets LCSNW criminal background clearance requirements and other job-relevant clearances as required by the State or program
