Qualifications

  • Basic supervision knowledge from training or lead work, with 6+ months of staff direction experience.
  • Experience applying policies and procedures in an adult correctional facility with supervision of offenders.
  • POS T certified as Correctional Officer or Detention Officer (or grandfathered) per IDAPA rules.
  • Some knowledge of training methods via college course, workshops, or leading formal training sessions.

The Mission of the Idaho Department of Correction is to create a model correctional system that provides equitable access to programming and opportunities that reflect a community experience, foster connections, and restore victims of crime. This position supervises correctional employees and performs difficult security and inmate management at a state correctional facility.

Responsibilities:
Trains correctional staff regarding facility rules, procedures, and specific post duties. Assigns work and inspects posts to ensure officers are performing properly. Evaluates officer performance based on established work standards. Mediates officer disputes Identifies needs and provides staff training. Responds to employee grievances May function as a Lieutenant when needed. Develops work schedules. Keeps time and attendance records. Maintains key control. Responsible for inmate count Inspects tiers, housing units, and compound for breaches of security. Oversees inventory and orders supplies. Supervises visiting activities. Monitors control room and unit logbooks. Authorizes inmate movement. Organizes and directs management of inmates in a living unit. Resolves difficult or volatile inmate conflicts. Handles protective custody requests. Provides input to support staff concerning inmates. Recommends work procedure and policy changes. Testifies at hearings and in court.Serves on review boards. Acts as institution hearing officer. Participates as member of classification committee. Functions as institution armory officer and maintains and uses firearms and riot control devices. Participates on cell or inmate living area search teams. Coordinates transport of inmates to court, medical appointments, and other facilities Supervises control room operations. Attempts to resolve inmate, employee, and facility problems.

Minimum Qualifications: Your resume needs to clearly articulate how your skills, education and experience meet the qualifications below –

  • Some Knowledge of supervision.This is typically gained by completion of a training class or seminar (8 or more hours, (e.g. Emerging Leaders) specifically covering supervisory practices AND at least 6 months of full-time work experience that involved work assignment, direction and monitoring of staff, OR at least 1 year of lead-work or supervisory experience that involved work assignment, direction, and monitoring of staff. Supervision of offenders does NOT qualify.
  • Experience applying policies and procedures, resident culture, and search, seizure, and restraint procedures in an adult correctional facility.This is typically gained from at least 2 years of full-time work experience in the corrections profession where supervision of offenders was a primary responsibility of the job.
  • Peace Officer and Standards Training (P.O.S.T.) certified as a Correctional Officer or Detention Officer OR be grandfathered in for the Correctional Officer certification in accordance with IDAPA Rule 11.11.04.052.
  • Some Knowledge of Training Methods.This is typically gained by successful completion of at least one college level course (3 credits) or workshops & classes of 16 hours (2 days) or more covering communication concepts, learning styles, course design, and presentation skills (e.g. Train the Trainer) OR experience co-presenting or leading formal training sessions to staff (such as at POST, refresher training etc.).
