Job description

Full-Time | Travel Required | Hourly Pay + Fringe Benefits | W-2 or 1099

Dean Marine & Excavating Inc., a leader in marine construction and dredging across the Great Lakes region, is seeking a Licensed Professional Surveyor (PS) to join our growing team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in hydrographic and topographic surveying and be prepared for frequent travel to support our active field operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and conduct accurate hydrographic and topographic surveys using multibeam sonar, single beam, RTK GPS, and total station instruments.
  • Perform pre-dredge, progress, and as-built surveys for marine construction and dredging projects.
  • Process data and generate deliverables using HYPACK, AutoCAD Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, and other relevant software.
  • Ensure surveys meet professional standards and project requirements.
  • Prepare survey drawings, documentation, and QA/QC reports.
  • Travel extensively throughout Michigan and the Great Lakes region.
  • Safely operate on boats, barges, and marine job sites in various environmental conditions.

Required Qualifications:

  • Licensed Professional Surveyor (PS) in Michigan or eligibility for reciprocity.
  • Degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant survey experience; experience with multibeam sonar, Hypack Survey, and DredgePack strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with GPS/GNSS, total stations, and survey data processing software.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel for extended field assignments.
  • Comfortable working in marine and construction environments.
  • 30-Hour OSHA Certificate preferred
  • Must be able to successfully pass all pre-employment testing (drug test, fit test) in addition to random drug and alcohol testing

Other Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (hard hat, eye and ear protection, safety vest, gloves, dust mask or respirator, fall protection gear, etc.)
  • Ability to work in varying outdoor weather conditions
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50lb

Compensation & Employment Terms:

Prevailing Wage Projects:

  • Hourly Rate: $50.00–$62.55/hour (based on contract wage determination)
  • Fringe Benefits: $31.20–$42.35/hour per applicable prevailing wage requirements

Non-Prevailing Wage Projects:

  • Hourly Rate: Negotiable based on experience and qualifications

Employment Status Based on Residency:

  • Michigan Residents: W-2 employee with full benefits (BCN health insurance, Dental, Vision, 401(k) with company match, etc.)
  • Out-of-State Residents: 1099 contractor (no benefits or company-paid insurance)
