Job summary

Stony Brook University seeks a Plant Utilities Engineer I to maintain HVAC and related systems across campus. The role requires climbing, lifting, and working in confined spaces, with a 40-hour week, 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m.

Monday through Friday, in a full-time capacity. The candidate will operate and maintain pumps, boilers, chillers, and building control systems, troubleshoot pneumatic and digital controls, and assist senior staff while ensuring safety protocols and timely completion of work

Qualifications

• Graduate of heating, HVAC, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration apprenticeship program or equivalent.
• Four years of hands-on experience in maintenance and operation of HVAC systems or boilers.
• Possession of High-Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer License or Stationary Engineer License.
• Completion of NYC NYS Dept. of Labor registered apprenticeship program for stationary engineers or HVAC-related field.

Responsibilities

• Operate and perform maintenance on HVAC and mechanical equipment including pumps, fans, controls, boilers, chillers, and steam generators.
• Troubleshoot pneumatic and digital control systems and maintain building management systems.
• Operate, maintain and repair HVAC distribution and refrigeration systems; work in confined spaces and utility tunnels.
• Follow work orders, document hours and materials, supervise junior staff as needed, and respond to HVAC calls on/off shift.
