Job summary

Burns & McDonnell is seeking a Staff Substation Engineer to develop design deliverables for high-voltage substations (13 kV–765 kV). You will work with a licensed professional engineer to guide projects from concept through construction, adjusting plans to meet budget, design factors, or client needs.

Responsibilities include preparing design packages, substation calculations, cost estimates, and equipment specs; supporting field inspections and client presentations; and ensuring QA/QC.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree from ABET-accredited program and 3 years of substation engineering experience.
• Or bachelor's degree from ABET-accredited program and FE exam with 3 years of substation experience.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong analytical/problem-solving abilities.

Responsibilities

• Supports substation projects from conceptual phase through completion.
• Prepares design packages, including physical arrangement, protective relaying and control, grounding, and lighting and security.
• Develops substation calculations (insulation, AC station service, DC systems, battery sizing, voltage drop).
• Prepares design sketches, cost estimates, equipment specs, BOMs, and other deliverables.
• Applies IEEE, NESC, and other industry standards; supports field inspections.
• Researches project data and supports client presentations and project status updates.
• Identifies and resolves issues with project managers and QA/QC processes.
• Collaborates with project team to meet schedules and client satisfaction.
• Performs design quality reviews and participates in proposal efforts.
