Job summary

Burns & McDonnell is seeking a Staff Substation Engineer to develop design deliverables for high-voltage power substations (13kV to 765kV). You will work with the project team through design and construction, adapting to budget, design factors, and client needs.

Responsibilities include preparing design packages, calculations, and specifications, applying industry standards, and supporting client presentations. Travel and collaboration across locations are expected.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering (ABET-accredited).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient in MS Office and general software.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Leadership and teamwork experience.

Responsibilities

• Supports substation projects from conceptual phase through completion.
• Prepares substation design packages: layout, protection, studies, lighting/security.
• Develops calculations: insulation, AC/DC, voltage drop, cable sizing, conduit fill.
• Prepares sketches, cost estimates, specs, BOMs, and deliverables.
• Applies IEEE, NESC and industry standards.
• Supports field inspections on public/private utilities.
• Compiles project data for managers and client updates.
• Supports client presentations, reports, and visuals.
• Identifies and resolves project issues with the team.
• Keeps schedule on track and meets deadlines.
• Performs design quality reviews and QA/QC checks.
• Engages with clients to build relationships.
