Job summary

Superior Construction is offering a summer internship in Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) on heavy civil and highway construction projects. The role supports the execution of the HSE plan, conducts site inspections, and assists with training and safety reporting.

A part-time nonexempt student internship requires progress toward a bachelor’s degree in Health and Safety or related field. The position is based in Orlando, FL with exposure to outdoor conditions and construction activities;

Responsibilities

  • Assist with implementing the Project Specific HSE Plan.
  • Perform one HSE site inspection per week.

Job Description

This is a summer internship position ONLY for 2027.

Summary/Objective

An integral team member who collaborates on the management and execution of a project safely and profitably.

Essential Functions
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • Assist with the implementation of the Project Specific HSE Plan.
  • Assist with the implementation of safe work practices, work plans, and job hazard analyses.
  • Have a working knowledge of Superior's HSE policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Perform one HSE work site inspection per week, at a minimum.
  • Assist with providing information to project personnel regarding applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with monitoring the use of personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Assist with worker orientations.
  • Assist with implementation and monitoring of the Task Hazard Analysis Program (THA).
  • Assist with the development and communication of statistical HSE information.
  • Conduct project-specific inspections complete with documentation.
  • Report health, safety, and environmental infractions.
  • Monitor and document the implementation of required corrective measures.
  • Assist with the investigation and documentation of health, safety, and environmental incidents.
  • Assist with the review of HSE reports for accuracy and completeness.
  • Assist with the preparation, implementation, review, and communication of project-specific emergency procedures.
  • Attend project or department-specific meetings.
  • Conduct Observations and THA audits.
  • Assist in the implementation and monitoring of HSE program compliance and effectiveness.
  • Assist with Project Training.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the Superior HSE policies and goal for zero incidents.

Supervisory Requirements

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

Employee will be working on heavy civil and highway construction sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. The position regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Time in the field is essential and will make up 80% of the intern's time with the other 20% spent in the office performing computer work along with assisting with training.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a part-time nonexempt position.

Travel

The role requires less than 5% travel. May be opportunities to visit other projects and locations, dependent upon availability and need.

Required Education and Experience
  • Working towards a bachelor's degree in Health and Safety or similar.
Preferred Education
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety Regulations (construction preferred but not required)

Strong oral and written communication skills

Additional Eligibility Requirements
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid and appropriate state driver's license before employment.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from the project office or site.
