Job summary

Superior Construction seeks a part-time Health and Safety Intern to support project teams in implementing HSE plans and safe work practices on heavy civil sites.

You will assist with site inspections, THA, incident reporting, and training communications while learning regulatory requirements and company policies in a hands-on, safety-first environment.

Qualifications

• Working towards a bachelor’s degree in Health and Safety or similar.
• Must possess or be able to obtain a valid state driver’s license before employment.
• Must have reliable transportation to and from the project office or site.

Responsibilities

• Assist with the implementation of the Project Specific HSE Plan.
• Assist with safe work practices, work plans, and job hazard analyses.
• Have working knowledge of HSE policies, practices, and procedures.
• Perform one HSE work site inspection per week, at a minimum.
• Assist with providing information to project personnel regarding applicable regulatory requirements.
• Assist with monitoring the use of personal protective equipment requirements.
• Assist with worker orientations.
• Assist with THA program implementation and monitoring.
• Assist with development and communication of statistical HSE information.
• Conduct project-specific inspections with documentation.
• Report health, safety, and environmental infractions.
• Monitor corrective measures and closures.
• Assist with investigation and documentation of incidents.
• Assist with review of HSE reports for accuracy and completeness.
• Assist with emergency procedures documentation and communication.
• Attend project or department meetings.
• Conduct Observations and THA audits.
• Assist in HSE program compliance and effectiveness.
• Assist with Project Training.

Essential Functions

Supervisory Requirements

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

Employee will be working on heavy civil and highway construction sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. The position regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Time in the field is essential and will make up 80% of the intern’s time with the other 20% spent in the office performing computer work along with assisting with training.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a part-time nonexempt position.

Travel

The role requires less than 5% travel. May be opportunities to visit other projects and locations, dependent upon availability and need.

Required Education And Experience

• Working towards a bachelor’s degree in Health and Safety or similar.

Preferred Education

• Knowledge of Health and Safety Regulations (construction preferred but not required)
• Strong oral and written communication skills
