Job summary

Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) seeks an experienced Systems Engineer, HPC & Storage to modernize, operate, and support its mission-critical research infrastructure. The role requires collaboration with faculty and researchers in a 24x7 support model, with occasional off-hours work.

The candidate will work on GPU-accelerated HPC, enterprise storage, and mixed cloud/on-prem solutions, ensuring security and compliance per HIPAA and NIST guidelines.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus four (4) years of related experience.
• Expert-level proficiency in systems automation and scripting (e.g., Bash, Python, PowerShell).
• Strong command of TCP/IP and IB networking, and virtualization technologies.
• Excellent written/verbal communication skills and demonstrated customer-service orientation toward academic researchers.
• Ability to lift equipment up to 50 lbs.

Responsibilities

• HPC Modernization & Infrastructure Engineering: modernize GPU-accelerated HPC, high-speed interconnects, and new clusters.
• Server & Cluster Administration: manage Linux servers, SLURM clusters, and databases; monitor performance.
• Enterprise Storage & Big Data Management: administer large-scale parallel storage, backups, and access control.
• Scientific Software & Research Applications: maintain Python, MATLAB, R, CUDA, PyTorch environments; support researchers.
• Virtualization & Cloud Integration: manage KVM, integrate on-prem with cloud resources.
• Identity & Access Management & Compliance: administer AD, enforce security and HIPAA/NIST standards.
• Resource Accounting & Collaboration: manage allocations, usage metrics; participate in committees.
