Job summary

VHC Health in Arlington, Virginia seeks a full-time Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join the Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery team. You will collaborate with surgeons and a multidisciplinary team to manage adults with liver, pancreas, gallbladder and biliary tract conditions, across outpatient and inpatient settings.

The role emphasizes evaluation, treatment planning, perioperative care and ongoing follow-up, with emphasis on patient safety, quality improvement and documentation.

Qualifications

• Graduate degree from an accredited NP or PA program.
• Current Virginia licensure as NP or PA, or eligibility to obtain/licensure.
• For Nurse Practitioners: RN licensure and national certification for patient population.
• For Physician Assistants: NCCPA certification.
• BLS certification required; ACLS preferred/required where applicable.
• Prescriptive authority and DEA registration where applicable.
• Two years of APP experience preferred.
• Experience in hepatobiliary/pancreatic surgery or related fields preferred.
• Acute care preparation preferred for inpatient roles.

Responsibilities

• Conduct new patient and follow-up evaluations, histories, physicals, records review and surgical readiness assessment.
• Develop and implement individualized care plans with HPB surgeons; order and interpret labs/imaging.
• Provide preop education and postop follow-up, wound checks, medication reconciliation.
• Participate in rounds, consultations, admissions and discharge planning; escalate concerns.
• Prescribe medications; monitor response and coordinate follow-up.
• Assist in operative care when authorized and privileged.
• Coordinate care with gastroenterology, oncology, interventional radiology, nursing and nutrition.
• Educate patients/caregivers about diagnoses, options and recovery expectations.
• Complete timely documentation and handoffs for continuity of care.
• Engage in quality improvement and evidence-based pathways.
