Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Corrections is seeking a supervisory corrections professional to oversee security subordinates in housing units and manage inmate custody and control under the Shift Lieutenant's supervision.

The role requires inspecting living areas for security, safety, and sanitation standards, conducting investigations into misconduct, assisting with counts, evaluating staff performance, counseling and training employees, and preparing reports.

Qualifications

• Requires high school diploma and relevant experience; bachelor’s degree may substitute.
• 18 months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.
• Certification by the SC Department of Corrections Training Academy and completion of Basic Supervisory Course within six months of entry.

Responsibilities

• Supervise subordinate security assigned to housing units and oversee custody and control of inmates.
• Conduct routine inspections of living areas for security, safety, and sanitation compliance.
• Conduct investigations of misconduct by inmates or staff in the area of responsibility.
• Assist in formal and informal counts.
• Supervise performance, conduct, and appearance of security personnel and prepare evaluations.
• Counsel and train staff; recommend disciplinary action as needed.
• Prepare reports as required.
• Position assigned to operations.
