Qualifications

  • Registered with the National Registration Examination of AOTA.

What You Will Do as a Hospice Occupational Therapist

As a Home Health Occupational Therapist, you will provide both direct and indirect supervision of the Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) and the Home Health Aide (HHA). Some of your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Evaluating patients’ functional statuses (muscle function, endurance, visual coordination, written and verbal communication, self-care abilities, etc.)
  • Evaluating home environment for hazards/barriers to more independent living and identifying equipment needs
  • Participating in the development of the plan of care
  • Developing treatment programs and establishing goals for improved function. Communicating plan of care to the physician and other team members
  • Teaching new skills or retraining patients in once familiar daily activities that have been lost due to illness or injury
  • Maintaining appropriate clinical records, notes, and reporting to the physician any changes in patient conditions
  • Fabricating splints and instructing patient in the use of various types of adaptive equipment to improve function
  • Training patient in the use of prosthetic and/or orthotic devices
  • Identifying patient and family/caregiver needs for other home health services and referring as appropriate

Education, Licensure & Certification Requirements

  • Graduate of an Occupational Therapy curriculum accredited jointly by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation of the American Medical Association and the American Occupational Therapy Association
  • Registered with the National Registration Examination of the American Occupational Therapy Association
  • Two (2) years of clinical experience as an Occupational Therapist
