The Histology Technologist is responsible for performing technical procedures in the histology laboratory, including preparation, processing, embedding, cutting, and staining tissue specimens for microscopic examination by a pathologist. This role ensures the accuracy and quality of histologic preparations, adhering to laboratory protocols, regulatory guidelines, and safety procedures. The Technologist plays a critical role in diagnostic accuracy and patient care by producing high-quality slides for interpretation.
Essential Functions
- Process, embed, cut, stain, and prepare tissue specimens using routine, special, and immunohistochemical techniques according to protocols.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot histology instruments and equipment.
- Perform and document quality control procedures to ensure testing accuracy and compliance.
- Verify specimen identification, ensure proper labeling, and resolve discrepancies.
- Maintain a clean laboratory workspace and ensure proper waste disposal and safety compliance.
- Prepare reagents and staining solutions, monitor supplies, and restock as needed.
- Perform clerical duties such as logging specimens, documentation, and data entry; assist with cytology pre-analytic functions if required.
- Apply age-specific and population-specific considerations when processing tissue specimens.
- Perform additional duties as assigned and comply with all policies and standards.
Qualifications
- 1-2 years of experience in a histology laboratory preferred.
