Job summary

The State of South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a skilled equipment operator to support road and bridge maintenance. You will operate medium duty equipment, perform grading, curb and gutter work, and assist in pothole repairs and traffic control setup.

Responsibilities also include vegetation management, pre-trip inspections, and readiness for extended shifts or inclement weather operations, with a focus on safety and compliance with DOT rules.

Job description

Job Responsibilities

Performs skilled manual labor and operates medium duty equipment such as tandem dump truck, belt loader and large roller in a variety of activities associated with the construction, repair and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system. Examples include grading, setting forms, pouring/finishing concrete for curbs, gutters, sidewalks and driveways. Performs work on shoulders, ditches, drainage structures, pavement markings, etc. Repairs potholes and base surface failures of roadway using hand tools such as shovel, pick, rake and asphalt lute to level asphalt as needed. Conducts the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide to warn motorists. Performs a variety of vegetation management activities using equipment such as weed eater, hedger, other gas/electric power tools and hand tools to perform these duties. Picks up litter, debris and dead animals. Conducts and documents pre-trip equipment/vehicle inspection in accordance with the Department's most current rules, policies and procedures for fleet safety. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, to include operating medium duty equipment. May include being available for extended working hours or 12 hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
