Job summary

State of South Carolina, Department of Transportation, seeks a maintenance worker in Allendale to operate a tandem dump truck and heavy equipment, hauling materials and performing roadway maintenance.

The role requires physical stamina, a valid CDL within six months, and six months of related work experience. You will inspect equipment, assist in after-hour emergencies, and help keep roadways safe for the public.

Qualifications

• Six months of related work experience or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required; Class A CDL must be attained within six months of placement.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
• May require extended hours or 12-hour shifts during inclement weather or emergencies.
• General maintenance work and safety compliance duties as assigned.

Job Responsibilities

Operates a tandem dump truck, while hauling materials, supplies and equipment to and from job sites. Performing duties using manual labor during roadway and right of way maintenance activities, to include repairs to shoulders, putting ditch back to grade, removing debris from highways.

Operates front-end loader, backhoe and motor grader in various maintenance activities. Use of power tools and hand tools to perform assigned maintenance activities. Flags traffic in low/high volume areas to control flow of traffic for protection of workers, equipment and general public. Conducts and documents pre-trip equipment/vehicle inspection in accordance with the Department's most current rules, policies and procedures according to fleet safety. Pick up litter, debris and dead animals from roadway. Assists in after hour emergencies and inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
