Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks a maintenance worker to operate heavy equipment and perform roadway tasks across the state. You will haul materials, repair shoulders, and maintain rights of way, while ensuring safety and efficiency on roadways.

The position requires six months of related experience, a valid driver's license, and the ability to obtain a Class A CDL within six months. After-hours and inclement weather shifts may be required to support operations.

Qualifications

• Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Responsibilities

• Operates a tandem dump truck, while hauling materials, supplies and equipment to and from job sites.
• Performs duties using manual labor during roadway and right of way maintenance activities, including repairs to shoulders and ditch restoration.
• Operates front-end loader, backhoe and motor grader in maintenance activities.
• Uses power tools and hand tools to perform assigned maintenance activities.
• Flags traffic in low/high volume areas to control traffic flow for protection of workers, equipment and public.
• Conducts and documents pre-trip equipment/vehicle inspections per fleet safety rules.
• Picks up litter, debris and dead animals from roadway.
• Assists in after hour emergencies and inclement weather operations; may include extended hours or 12-hour shifts.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Operates front-end loader, backhoe and motor grader in various maintenance activities. Use of power tools and hand tools to perform assigned maintenance activities. Flags traffic in low/high volume areas to control flow of traffic for protection of workers, equipment and general public. Conducts and documents pre-trip equipment/vehicle inspection in accordance with the Department's most current rules, policies and procedures according to fleet safety. Pick up litter, debris and dead animals from roadway. Assists in after hour emergencies and inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
