Job summary

South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a Maintenance Worker to assist in a wide range of road and bridge upkeep across the state highway system under direct supervision. You will operate standard motorized equipment and transport materials on Highway Maintenance crews.

Duties include performing manual tasks, ensuring safety, flagging traffic, cleaning ditches, patching potholes, and supporting emergency or weather operations.

Qualifications

• Valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
• Attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Under direct supervision, assists in maintenance activities for roads and bridges on the state highway system.
• Operates dump trucks, flatbed trucks, and small equipment as part of highway maintenance operations.
• Performs manual labor tasks: sign installation/repairs, vegetation management, drainage cleaning, pothole patches, and base repairs.
• Flags traffic to protect workers and the public; assists in emergency/weather operations and extended hours when needed.
