Job summary

South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a motivated worker to perform skilled manual labor and operate medium equipment for the construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system. The role includes grading, concrete work, drainage, and traffic control in a dynamic maintenance environment.

The position requires a valid driver’s license with CDL to be obtained within six months.

Qualifications

Six (6) months of related work experience or an approved acceptable equivalence.
A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required; Class A CDL must be obtained within six months of placement.
Must be physically able to perform duties, including lifting up to 50 lbs and working in variable weather and traffic.
May require extended hours or 12-hour shifts for emergencies.

Responsibilities

Operate medium equipment for road and bridge maintenance on the state highway system.
Perform tasks such as grading, setting forms, and concrete work for curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and driveways.
Maintain drainage structures, pavement markings, and shoulder work.
Assist with placement of traffic control devices and act as a flagger in work zones.
Inspect equipment and vehicles before use per fleet safety rules and procedures.
Operate snow plow attachments and salt spreaders during winter weather.
Support emergency operations as needed and be available for extended hours.
