Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a skilled maintenance worker to support the construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system. You will operate a range of motorized and heavy equipment in coordination with crew teams.

Responsibilities include patching road surfaces, installing signs, maintaining drainage and vegetation, and ensuring safety during operations. A valid driver’s license and CDL within six months are required.

Responsibilities

• Maintain roads and bridges on the state highway system under general supervision.
• Operate motorized equipment for construction, repair, and material handling.
• Operate heavy equipment (grader, backhoe, crawler dozer, excavators, slope mowers) with maintenance operations.
• Perform vegetation management, drainage, and brush/limb management.
• Install and maintain signs and sign foundations; set forms and pour concrete for curbs and sidewalks.
• Conduct safety inspections and preventive maintenance; monitor fluids, hoses, belts, tires for wear.
• Operate dump trucks, lowboys, and transport equipment; support traffic control and work zones.
• Assist in safety practices and on-call rotations; respond to emergency weather operations.
• Other related duties as assigned.
