Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks a skilled equipment operator for the Lexington Maintenance West Columbia Section Shed. The role involves operating a tandem dump truck to haul equipment and materials, ensuring tarps are secured and debris is cleared to SCDOT standards.

You will also perform preventive maintenance and assist in site preparation for complex work zones. Additionally, duties include litter pickup, right-of-way work, and brush management.

Qualifications

• Six (6) months of related work experience or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• Requires a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
• Must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Operates tandem dump truck to haul equipment and materials to and from the jobsite; ensures tarp is in place and all loose material is removed from sides before operation.
• Performs preventive maintenance on equipment and keeps records of the same.
• Performs litter pickup, asphalt repair, minor guardrail repairs, right-of-way fence repairs, clearing of right-of-way and brush management.
• Ensures work areas are dressed and debris removed per SCDOT standards.
• Assists in constructing complex work zones with traffic devices required by the SC MUTCD for Interstate routes.
• During interstate restrictions around Columbia, night work is a mandatory requirement to complete work orders.
• Assists in the operation of the jet vac during catch basin cleaning on I-20, I-26 and I-77.
• Operates medium to heavy equipment during emergencies and/or hazardous weather; may be required to work extended shifts.
