Job summary

South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks a heavy equipment operator for the Lexington Maintenance West Columbia Section Shed. You will operate a tandem dump truck to haul gear, apply tarps, and ensure clean, safe loads for each run.

The role includes basic preventive maintenance, litter pickup, asphalt and guardrail work, and right-of-way clearing. You may work overtime during emergencies or inclement weather, and must obtain a Class A CDL within six months.

Qualifications

• Six months of related work experience or an approved equivalence.

• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of placement.

• Operate tandem dump truck to haul equipment/materials to/from jobsite.

• Assist in constructing complex work zones with traffic devices per SC MUTCD.
• Assist in jet vac operations during catch basin cleaning on I-20, I-26, I-77.
• Work during emergencies/hazardous weather and potential extended shifts.

Job description

At the Lexington Maintenance West Columbia Section Shed, operates tandem dump truck to haul equipment and materials to and from the jobsite. Ensures tarp is in place and all loose material has been removed from sides of truck before operation begins. Performs preventive maintenance on equipment and keeps record of the same. Performs activities including litter pick up, asphalt repair, minor guardrail repairs, right-of-way fence repairs, clearing of right-of-way and brush management. Ensures all work is completed by SCDOT standards and ensures that work areas is left dressed and all excess materials and debris removed. Assists in the construction of complex work zones with traffic devices required by the SC MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) for Interstate routes. During daytime restrictions set forth by SCDOT Headquarters on I-20, I-26 and I-77 around the Columbia Metropolitan area, night work is a mandatory requirement to complete work orders on these sections of Interstate. Assists in the operation of the jet vac during the catch basin cleaning operation on I-20, 1-26 and I-77. Operates medium to heavy equipment during emergencies and/or hazardous weather. Employee is expected to work during emergencies and/or hazardous weather. May be required to work extended shifts.

Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.

May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
