Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator to support highway and bridge maintenance operations. The role involves operating a 5-yard dump truck for hauling asphalt, dirt, pipe, and debris, and performing related manual tasks ensuring safe and efficient maintenance.

During winter operations you will run a dump truck with snow plow, sand spreader, or brine applicator, and may operate tandem dump trucks, a large roller, or a skid steer as needed.

Qualifications

• There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) must be attained within six months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Operate 5 yard standard dump truck for hauling materials such as asphalt, dirt, pipe, construction materials, and debris.
• Operate dump truck with snow plow and sand spreader or brine applicator during snow/ice operations.
• Operate small equipment such as brush chipper, roller, self contained sweeper tractor with broom, tractor with mower in conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance operations.
• Perform manual labor in various maintenance operations such as clearing right-of-ways, tree removal, cleaning out drainage ditches, patch potholes, and paving drives.
• Assist with the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up maintenance work zones.
• Serve as a flagger to safely direct and control traffic in maintenance work zones.
• Operate medium equipment such as tandem dump trucks, large roller, and skid steer in various maintenance operations.
