Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a skilled worker to operate dump and flatbed trucks, snow plow equipment, and heavier machinery for hauling materials and maintaining roadways. You will support traffic control, conduct safety inspections, and perform related duties on state highways and bridges.

Ideal candidates will assist with maintenance tasks, ensure fleet safety compliance, and work occasional extended hours during inclement weather.

Qualifications

• There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required upon entry to the position.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of placement.
• Physical demands include bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
• May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week, especially during inclement weather.

Responsibilities

• Operates 5-yard standard dump truck and flatbed truck for hauling materials such as asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe, construction materials, and debris.
• Operates snow plow and spreader in conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance operations, and a dump truck with snow plow and sand spreader or brine sprayer for snow/ice removal from highways and bridges.
• Performs manual labor in activities related to construction, repair, and preservation of state highway roads and bridges.
• Assists with placement of traffic control devices to properly set up maintenance work zones.
• Serves as a flagger to safely direct and control traffic in maintenance work zones.
• Removes litter, debris, and dead animals from roadway and rights-of-way.
• Operates heavier equipment such as front-end loaders, belt loaders, tractor with ditcher, specialized mowers, trailer-mounted injection patcher, and backhoes.
• Conducts and documents pre-trip equipment/vehicle inspections in accordance with the Department's rules, policies, and procedures for fleet safety.
