Job summary

The State of South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a skilled equipment operator to support roadway maintenance operations. You will drive and operate heavy and medium equipment, assist with safety practices, and coordinate traffic control in work zones across the state.

Responsibilities include record-keeping of materials and work performed, safety inspections, and participation in emergency weather operations.

Qualifications

• One year of related work experience or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required upon entry to the position.
• Must attain a Class A CDL within six months of placement in the position.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and work outdoors in various conditions.

Responsibilities

• Operate heavy equipment such as paint truck for roadway lines and thermoplastic install.
• Operate backhoe, slope mower, motor grader during winter or when painting is paused.
• Operate medium equipment like tandem dump truck and skid steer for debris removal.
• Assist crew with safety practices, flagging, and wearing safety equipment.
• Coordinate placement of traffic control devices per SC DOT manuals.
• Produce daily records of work performed and materials used.
• Conduct safety inspections on assigned vehicles and equipment.
• Monitor preventative maintenance and equipment wear to prolong life.
• Assist in emergency weather operations; may require extended hours or 12-hour shifts.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
