Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking an Equipment Operator capable of operating and maintaining heavy road-use machinery and performing essential maintenance tasks along highways and rights-of-way.

You will be responsible for operating tandem dump trucks, backhoes, excavators, and loaders, while ensuring public safety by flagging traffic and adhering to procedures. A CDL must be obtained within 6 months, and shifts may include emergencies and after-hours work.

Qualifications

• Six months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of placement in the position.

Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain medium duty equipment such as tandem dump trucks, skid steer, and tractors with mower.
• Perform roadway maintenance including clearing right-of-ways, drainage, pothole repairs, and paving driveways.
• Flag traffic to protect workers and the motoring public during road repairs.
• Assist in emergencies and inclement weather operations; may require hours outside normal schedule.
