Job summary

The State of South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks a Heavy Equipment Operator to maintain drainage ditches, install pipes, and perform road shoulder repairs. You will lead a maintenance crew, operate loaders, backhoes, dump trucks, and support foremen in setting up work zones.

Two years of related experience or an approved equivalence are required, plus a valid driver's license with CDL Class A within six months.

Qualifications

• Two years of related work experience or equivalent.
• Valid driver’s license required; CDL Class A within six months.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physically demanding tasks.
• Willingness to work outside normal hours during emergencies and inclement weather.
• Knowledge of safety practices and flagging operations.

Responsibilities

• Operate front-end loader, backhoe, dump trucks, and tractor-trailer as needed.
• Maintain drainage ditches and install pipes; shoulder and road repairs.
• Lead maintenance crew and assist foreman with work zones setup.
• Record daily work and materials; maintain HMMS data.
• Ensure equipment is maintained per SCDOT guidelines.
• Respond to emergencies and on-call shifts as required.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
