Job summary

The Virginia Department of Transportation in Chantilly, VA seeks a Project Inspector to inspect highway construction and maintenance, ensuring quality per plans and specifications and maintaining a safe transportation system for the traveling public.

You will support supervision, manage documentation, testing, and coordination with contractors, officials, and the public, handling environmental controls, safety, and project closeout, with an emphasis on accurate reporting and compliance.

Qualifications

• Ability to communicate effectively with VDOT and the public in writing and speech.
• Ability to read, interpret and analyze roadway, structure and bridge plans.
• Knowledge of mathematics including algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
• Possession of or ability to obtain required certifications within 12 months of employment.
• Safety shoes required and valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Communicate with project staff and the public about traffic changes and project phases.
• Ensure construction activities meet contract, plans, environmental, and safety requirements.
• Maintain detailed project records, diaries, and daily logs linked to contract documents.
• Oversee materials testing and ensure proper documentation before payment.
• Support or serve as Project Inspector for less complex contracts.
