Job summary

State of Missouri is hiring for a heavy equipment operator position based at St. Joe State Park, Park Hills, MO. The role involves operating bulldozers, graders and other machinery to maintain park properties and improve trails and roads.

Responsibilities include reading design plans, installing culverts and grading surfaces, plus training staff and ensuring safety standards. Some evenings, weekends, and overnight stays may be required.

Qualifications

  • 4–6 years of experience with heavy equipment operations.
  • Must possess Missouri Class A Commercial Driver’s License at time of appointment and maintain it.
  • Must complete Level 1 prescribed fire training within 12 months of employment.
  • Must perform strenuous outdoor work in varied weather; lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be available for evenings/holidays and some overnight travel as required.

Please note: The salary range listed in this job description is a base salary. Applicants eligible for years-of-service adjustments or shift differentials may exceed salary range listed above.

This position will be located at St. Joe State Park, 2800 Pimville Road, Park Hills, MO. 63601. Shifts are primarily Monday through Friday 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break. Position will require working a minimum of one weekend a month during the on season. Must be available to participate in meetings, workshops, and seminars requiring overnight stays.

  • Operate heavy equipment (bulldozers, road graders, etc.) to assist with maintenance of and improvement to Missouri State Park properties; operate medium sized equipment (large tractors, excavators, skid steers, dump trucks, backhoes, road tractors, etc.); and utilize attachments and/or light equipment as needed.
  • Read design plans to determine required grading and/or excavation; uses a transit to establish reference points to assist with establishing final grades.
  • Install or replace culverts, reestablish ditch lines, add aggregate surfacing material and/or grade gravel roads, parking areas, and trails utilizing heavy equipment.
  • Operate aerial devices to trim trees and/or remove hazardous limbs.
  • Operate heavy equipment to construct and/or repair roads, parking areas, and trails.
  • Excavate areas for installation and construction of footings and foundations for building construction.
  • Assist with debris removal, cleanup, and site restoration following unforeseen disasters utilizing a variety of equipment.
  • Load, secure, transport, and unload equipment, tools, and supplies.
  • Perform minor repairs, and routine and preventative maintenance on equipment; record and monitor equipment’s operating hours.
  • Perform manual labor incidental to assigned work assignments.
  • Instruct and train other staff in the operations and proper use of equipment.
  • Confer with design and/or supervisor staff to confirm or seek clarification of assigned tasks; determine work methods and sequence.
  • Exercise independence and judgement in the performance of responsibilities under general supervision; work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through inspections.
  • As a special requirement, this position is required to have a Commercial Operator’s License. You must currently have this license/certification to be considered for the position.
  • This position may also require water/wastewater certifications, and/or other required licenses/certification. If required and if you do not currently possess this license/certification, you will be given twelve months to obtain necessary license/certification.

Equivalent To Those Typically Gained By
  • Four to six years of experience with heavy equipment operations.
  • This position is required to possess a Missouri Class A Commercial Driver’s License at time of appointment and maintain it throughout employment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of proper operation and maintenance of various equipment and the safety standards, rules and regulations pertaining to assigned equipment.
  • Must complete Level 1 prescribed fire training within 12 months of employment.
  • Must be able to perform strenuous physical outdoor work in extreme or inclement weather conditions, able to stand or walk on uneven terrain for extended periods, lift, carry and load up to 50 pounds repeatedly, bend stoop, crawl and work on elevated surfaces, operate equipment for extended timeframes such as mowers, tractors, trimmers, backpack blowers, climb ladders.
  • Must be able to work some evenings and holidays.
