Job summary

Missouri Department of Natural Resources is seeking a versatile Park Maintenance Technician at Castlewood State Park in Ballwin, MO. The role involves semi-skilled work across facilities, grounds, and trail systems, with occasional water/wastewater certification tasks and on-site repairs.

The position requires the ability to perform strenuous outdoor work, lift heavy objects, and work weekends/holidays. Training and certifications may be provided within the first year of employment.

Qualifications

  • One to three years of experience in trade areas including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, concrete and masonry, painting, plastering, and mechanical repair.
  • Possess and maintain a valid vehicle operator’s license.
  • Must be able to perform strenuous outdoor work and lift 50–75 pounds repeatedly.

Responsibilities

  • Perform facility maintenance and upkeep per facility plans, including vehicle and equipment maintenance.
  • Assist with assigning tasks to and reviewing work of seasonal maintenance staff.
  • Procure operating supplies, parts and project materials per rules and procedures.
  • Communicate openly with the public, external stakeholders, supervisors and subordinates.
  • Support resource stewardship and participate in vegetation management and controlled burns as assigned.

Please note: The salary range listed in this job description is a base salary. Applicants eligible for years-of-service adjustments or shift differentials may exceed salary range listed above.

This position will be located at Castlewood State Park, 1401 Kiefer Creek Road, Ballwin MO 63021. Standard work shift is 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. but will vary according to facility demands and will include working at least one weekend per month and various holidays and evenings. This position will assist at other state parks as needed.

  • Semi-skilled work in facility maintenance, grounds maintenance, construction and repair of buildings and trail system, and routine cleaning of structures and grounds with occasionally assisting in the operation of the water/wastewater systems.
  • Assist with assigning tasks to and reviewing work of seasonal maintenance staff.
  • Direct and perform facility maintenance and upkeep according to facility plans, including vehicle and equipment maintenance, routine preventive maintenance, grounds keeping, buildings and structures maintenance, infrastructure and tree trimming. Must be able to perform some vehicle and equipment repairs on site.
  • Purchase operating supplies, parts and project materials as necessary. Become familiar with and follow all procurement rules and procedures.
  • Communicate openly and effectively with the public, external stakeholders, supervisors and subordinates.
  • Assist with stewardship of resources, both natural and cultural. Participate in controlled burns, invasive plant removal and other resource management related projects and assist with maintaining the vegetation on site to include researching, planting, weeding, watering and harvesting. Participate in off-site controlled burns at other parks in the unit, and/or to help meet Region or Statewide management goals.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of park rules, regulations, procedures and policies. Attend mandatory and other trainings including overnight stays to learn new or enhance existing skills.
  • This position may be required to obtain and maintain water/wastewater certifications, and/or other required licenses/certification. If required and if you do not currently possess this license/certification, you will be given twelve months to obtain necessary license/certification.

Equivalent to those typically gained by:

  • One to three years of experience in a variety of trade areas including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, concrete and masonry, painting, plastering, and mechanical repair. (Additional education or experience may substitute for the required education or experience)

Preferred Qualifications and Experience/Special Job Requirements

  • Possess and maintain a valid vehicle operator’s license.
  • Perform strenuous physical outdoor work, able to walk on uneven terrain for extended periods of time, able to perform duties in rugged terrain, lift and load 50 to 75 pound objects repeatedly, walk and work on roofs, operate equipment for extended timeframes such as mowers, tractors, trimmers and backpack blowers and climb ladders.
  • Must be able to work some weekends, evenings, and holidays.
  • Fire Certification, S-190 or MDC Level 1, must be obtained within the first 12 months of employment.
