Job summary

The State of Missouri, Soil and Water Conservation Program in the Missouri Geological Survey division, seeks a licensed Civil Engineer to lead a team focused on designing and implementing conservation solutions with SWCDs throughout the state. This role requires project oversight, design expertise, and staff supervision, with travel across Missouri.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of relevant engineering experience.

Job description

This position is with the Soil and Water Conservation Program (SWCP) of the Missouri Geological Survey division and will be located at the Lewis and Clark State Office Building, 1101 Riverside Drive, Jefferson City, Missouri. Extensive day trip travel and with some overnight stays required.

This is a new role within the Department of Natural Resources that will lead a team of engineers to help design and implement solutions for conservation practices alongside the Soil and Water Conservation Districts within the state. Come help build and lead a team dedicated to the planning and oversight of engineering solutions that will help preserve our natural resources alongside agricultural landowners and communities!

  • Oversee and perform engineering duties including planning, design, construction inspection, and quality assurance review for conservation practices regarding water management and distribution, animal waste management, stormwater and erosion control, irrigation, and other conservation practices.
  • Complete and/or oversee all aspects of engineering design including calculations, preliminary and final drawings, project specifications, and operation and maintenance plans.
  • Supervise Associate Engineers and assist them in developing the skills and knowledge necessary to oversee and complete engineering work for the implementation of conservation practices.
  • Perform preliminary site investigations, inspection during construction, and post-construction inspection.
  • Develop, oversee, and train Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) staff in the process of granting job approval authority for implementation of engineering practices.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • This position requires licensure as a Professional Engineer in the State of Missouri
  • This position is required to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Must have the ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Must have the ability to traverse rough terrain and work in a variety of weather conditions.

To be successful in this position, a candidate will need the following skills:
  • Civil Engineering: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods required to plan, design, construct, operate, and maintain facilities such as buildings, transportation systems, water and sanitary systems, and other public works systems.
  • Environmental Engineering: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods to protect and improve the quality of the environment and its resources; and to monitor, control, abate, and prevent pollutants.
  • Project Management: Knowledge of the principles, methods, or tools for developing, scheduling, coordinating, and managing projects and resources, including monitoring and inspecting costs, work, and contractor performance.
  • Developing Others: Develops the ability of others to perform and contribute to the organization by providing ongoing feedback and by providing opportunities to learn through formal and informal methods.
  • Planning and Evaluating: Organizes work, sets priorities, and determines resource requirements; determines short- or long-term goals and strategies to achieve them; coordinates with other organizations or parts of the organization to accomplish goals; monitors progress and evaluates outcomes.
  • Problem Solving: Identifies and analyzes problems; weighs relevance and accuracy of information; generates and evaluates alternative solutions; makes recommendations; and
  • Interpersonal Skills: Treats others with courtesy, sensitivity, and respect. Considers and responds appropriately to the needs and feelings of different people in different situations.
Equivalent To Those Typically Gained By
  • A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related discipline from an ABET accredited program AND 4 or more years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Engineering knowledge and skills regarding agricultural conservation practices.
Preferred Qualifications
  • One or more years of experience directly overseeing, mentoring, or leading engineers.
  • Training, certification, and/or education in continuous process improvement programs such as Lean Six Sigma as well as completion of Missouri Way, Leadership Academy, and similar programs is preferred.
