Job summary

Farnsworth Group, a nationally recognized architectural engineering and surveying firm, seeks a Mechanical Project Engineer - Healthcare to lead project-level mechanical design and coordination for hospitals and medical facilities in the Midwest.

The role focuses on design execution, BIM coordination (Revit), field surveys, energy studies, and mentoring junior staff under mechanical managers. Requires a BS in Mechanical Engineering, EIT, 8–12+ years experience, and strong communication.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering is required.
• EIT required; PE or ability to obtain preferred.
• 8–12+ years of experience in building mechanical design, healthcare focus ideal.
• Experience acting as project-level mechanical engineer for design production and coordination.
• Proficiency with HVAC design tools and BIM coordination; Revit is essential.

Responsibilities

• Act as project mechanical engineer on healthcare and institutional projects, managing day-to-day design delivery and coordination.
• Design HVAC and mechanical systems, including load calculations, sizing, layouts, narratives, drawings and specs.
• Coordinate mechanical designs in BIM (Revit) with other disciplines to produce fully coordinated construction documents.
• Perform field surveys and site investigations to document existing conditions for renovations or expansions.
• Support energy and life-cycle cost evaluations with senior staff.
• Assist with construction administration, including submittals, RFIs, site observations, and punch lists.
• Apply codes and standards (IMC, IBC, NFPA, ASHRAE, NFPA 170, FGI Guidelines) for Illinois and neighboring jurisdictions.
• Provide guidance and QA redlines to designers and junior engineers; support project managers with scope and schedule input.
