Job summary

OpenAI's Forward Deployed Engineering team seeks a Forward Deployed Engineer to own end-to-end deployments of models in healthcare organizations, including payers, providers, and health systems. You will lead technical discovery, architecture, implementation, evaluation, productionization, and handoff, translating complex workflows and regulatory constraints into production AI systems.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of software/ML/AI engineering or comparable experience.
• Senior engineer, tech lead, or deployment owner who can make technical decisions in ambiguous environments.
• Hands-on with technical discovery, architecture, implementation, evaluation, productionization, and handoff for complex customer-facing systems.
• Healthcare experience including payer/provider/EHR workflows and interoperability standards.
• Exposure to Epic, HL7, and FHIR technologies and healthcare data flows.
• Strong judgment on AI evaluation, privacy, security, governance, and reliability.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical solution end to end from discovery through architecture, implementation, evaluation, deployment, adoption, and handoff.
• Collaborate with customer engineers, operators, and domain experts to translate workflows into technical requirements and measurable outcomes.
• Design and implement production AI applications and agentic systems that integrate with EHRs, claims systems, data platforms, and enterprise APIs.
• Build safeguards for PHI, HIPAA, privacy, security, authorization, governance, and auditability.
• Define and operationalize evaluations, human-review workflows, escalation paths, and launch criteria.
• Use evaluation results and customer feedback to improve system reliability, performance, and production readiness.
• Distill deployment learnings into reference architectures and reusable primitives for healthcare and regulated environments.
