Job summary

Bay Mills Indian Community is seeking a Health Information Technician to maintain patient health records across Bay Mills Health Center and other locations. You will ensure confidentiality, organize both electronic and paper records, and support audits and data accuracy in the EHR system.

The role requires adherence to HIPAA, Privacy Act guidelines, and standard record processes. A high school diploma is required, with preferred advanced certification and an associate degree in health

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum 2 years in a Health and Human Services setting.
• Minimum 2 years with standardized records in a confidential setting.
• Certification: CEHRS or similar within 18 months of hire.
• Associate degree in Health Information Technology preferred; 3–5 years experience accepted.
• Excellent past work and attendance record.
• Ability to perform required functions and physical demands.

Responsibilities

• Maintain day-to-day patient health records, ensuring compliance, security and safety.
• Preserve confidentiality of records per Privacy Act and HIPAA.
• Prepare responses to routine release of patient information requests.
• Prepare inactive medical records for storage per BMHC policy.
• Ensure records are properly sequenced with all forms present and signed.
• Assist in evaluating records and participate in audits.
• Coordinate with outside facilities to obtain and distribute records.
• Follow BMHC practice management system procedures for data.
• Ensure accuracy of historical data entry into the EHR.
• Organize electronic and paper records and scan records into EHR.
• Schedule patient appointments as assigned.
• Perform other duties within scope as needed.
• Attend mandatory trainings offered by HR or Department Director.
