Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• 1 year of customer service experience required.
• Preferred: Associate or Bachelor's in Health Information Management.
• Preferred: 1 year healthcare experience in medical records processing.

Responsibilities

• Ensure release of information procedures follow SHC policies and HIPAA/HITECH regulations.
• Ensure authorizations for release of health information are HIPAA compliant.
• Perform quality checks on records before printing, faxing, or uploading.
• Scan/import requests for accessibility in the EMR system.
• Process information requests from paper records, microfiche, or electronic storage.
• Monitor and assist physicians/staff to complete deficiencies in medical records; compile data and prepare reports.
• Answer department calls and route to appropriate area.
• Handle complaints, provide solutions, and follow up with customers.

Job Summary

The Health Information Management Specialist ensures the accuracy, completeness, and confidentiality of patient health information, supporting Shriners Hospitals for Children's commitment to exceptional patient care and regulatory compliance. This role involves maintaining medical records, facilitating information flow, and upholding data integrity.

Key Responsibilities

• Ensures appropriate Release of Information procedures are followed as required by SHC policies, and state/federal confidentiality regulations, including HIPAA and HITECH.
• Ensures authorizations for release of heath information are HIPAA compliant and releases patient information in accordance with minimum necessary guidelines.
• Performs quality checks on records before printing/copying, faxing and/or uploading the medical record, prior to release of health information.
• Scans and/or import requests accurately and timely for accessibility in the EMR system.
• Processes requests for information including all paper-based records, microfiche/microfilm, other electronic storage or records stored in any offsite locations.
• Monitors, assists, and follows up with physicians and other hospital staff in completion of deficiencies in the medical record, compiles, verifies data and prepares reports regarding patient related statistics and distributes/posts data.
• Assists in answering department calls and routes to appropriate area.
• Handle complaints, provide appropriate solutions for customers, and follow-up to resolve any issues their customers experience.

Required Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED
• 1 Year Customer Service

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate/Bachelor in Health Information Management
• 1 Year Healthcare experience in medical records processing operation

Compensation is determined based on years of relevant experience and departmental equity.
