Job summary

Virginia Beach City Public Schools is seeking an experienced custodian to perform intermediate to high level custodial work, maintain cleanliness of school buildings, surrounding grounds and furnishings, and supervise other custodial staff.

You will receive classroom and hands-on training with cleaning tools, equipment, and safety protocols. The role supports events, deliveries, and facility inspections to ensure a safe learning environment.

Qualifications

• GED or some high school. Considerable custodial experience.
• Preferred: High School Diploma.
• Comparable training/experience may substitute minimum qualifications.

Responsibilities

• May serve as the head custodian in an elementary school or head night custodian in a middle or high school.
• Supervise custodial workers; clean interiors and maintain school grounds.
• Ensure doors are secured, clean classrooms, restrooms, cafeterias, and halls; accept deliveries.
• Assist with events, set-up/break-down for special occasions, and coordinate with staff.
• Report to Fire Marshall inspections and manage general building upkeep.
• Repair minor hardware, monitor lighting, and inspect building systems.
