Job description

Atomic Machines is ushering in a new era in micromanufacturing with its Matter Compiler (MC) technology. The MC enables new classes of micromachines to be designed and built by offering manufacturing processes and a materials library that is inaccessible to semiconductor manufacturing methods. The MC promises to unlock MEMS manufacturing both for the many device classes that never could be made by semiconductor methods but also to open up entirely new classes. Furthermore, the MC is fully digital in the way 3D printing is digital, but where 3D printing produces parts of a single material using a single process, the MC is a multi-process, multi-material technology: bits and raw materials go in and complete, functional micromachines come out. The Atomic Machines team has also created an exciting first device – one that was only made possible by the existence of the Matter Compiler – that we will be unveiling to the world soon.

Our offices are in Emeryville and Santa Clara, California.

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Corporate Head of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) to join our management team and ensure our operations meet the highest standards of safety, compliance, and environmental responsibility. In this role, you will be central to our innovation! Your leadership will ensure that the environments where the Matter Compiler is built and operates remain compliant, efficient and resilient - empowering the engineering teams to push boundaries while maintaining a culture of safety and responsibility.

This is an opportunity to define how safety, sustainability, and operational excellence intersect at the cutting edge of advanced manufacturing! You will lead the development, implementation, and oversight of our company-wide environmental, health, and safety programs.

What You'll Do:
  • Leadership & Strategy
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive EHS strategy aligned with business objectives.
  • Serve as the primary advisor to senior leadership on all EHS-related matters.
  • Foster a culture of safety and environmental stewardship across all locations.
  • Hire and manage EHS teams at each Atomic Machines location.
  • Approver for design for safety on all equipment used at AM sites
  • Regulatory Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local EHS regulations, including OSHA, EPA, CDRH, and relevant international standards.
  • Oversee audits, inspections, and incident investigations, ensuring timely corrective actions and reporting.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of EHS legislation and emerging industry trends.
  • Program Development & Implementation
  • Design and implement robust safety programs for handling and working around chemicals, lasers, robotics, electrical energy, and other hazardous operations.
  • Develop emergency response plans, training programs, and safety protocols tailored to each location's unique needs.
  • Implement and manage environmental initiatives, including waste management, emissions reduction, and sustainability projects.
Risk Management & Continuous Improvement
  • Conduct risk assessments and hazard analyses for all operational processes, including the use of chemicals, lasers, electrical circuits and robotics.
  • Define procedures for the safe on-boarding of new processes and equipment.
  • Monitor safety metrics, analyze trends, and drive continuous improvement in EHS performance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate EHS considerations into product and equipment design, operations, and supply chain activities.
Team Management & Training
  • Lead and mentor site-specific EHS teams and professionals, fostering skill development and accountability.
  • Oversee company-wide training programs to ensure employees are informed and empowered to work safely.
  • Stakeholder Engagement
  • Act as the primary liaison with regulatory bodies, external auditors, customers, corporate partners, and community stakeholders on EHS matters.
  • Communicate EHS performance, challenges, and achievements to internal and external stakeholders.
What You'll Need:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Engineering, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • 10+ years of progressive EHS experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role overseeing EHS at multiple sites.
  • Expertise in managing EHS programs in industries involving chemicals, lasers, robotics, electrical energy, or similar technologies.
  • Experience working with teams on designing and building capital equipment with safety as a requirement.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable regulatory frameworks (e.g., OSHA, EPA, ANSI, NFPA).
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing EHS strategies in multi-site operations.
  • Certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional), CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist), or CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager) are highly desirable.
Key Competencies:
  • Strategic and analytical thinking with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, innovative environment.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Passion for safety, environmental stewardship, and employee well-being.
