Software Guidance & Assistance, Inc., (SGA), is searching for a Head of Engineering – Intelligent Automation for a direct placement assignment with one of our premier Insurance clients in NYC, Holmdel, NJ, or Bethlehem, PA. NYC or NJ is preferred. Hybrid schedule.

The Head of Engineering – Intelligent Automation is the enterprise-wide owner of all legacy automation platforms across the company. This leader oversees RPA (attended and unattended), NLP systems, digital assistants, and multiple older automation technologies.

This is not a hands-on developer or UiPath implementer role. It is a large-scale people, organizational, and architectural leadership position focusing on optimizing a global engineering team, improving performance and stability, and guiding modernization of long-standing automation systems.

The ideal candidate brings deep experience leading large automation engineering organizations (30+ people), strong communication skills, and the ability to stabilize, scale, and enhance complex automation environments across a distributed enterprise.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

Enterprise Automation Leadership

• Own all legacy automation systems across the enterprise, not tied to any single business unit.
• Lead and manage a 30+ person engineering organization across onshore and offshore locations.
• Drive organizational optimization, process improvement, and performance management.
• Oversee maintenance, enhancement, and stabilization of existing automation platforms.
  
  

Architecture & Platform Oversight

• Provide high-level architectural direction for aging and modern automation platforms.
• Ensure automation systems remain scalable, secure, and aligned with enterprise standards.
• Guide modernization roadmaps, platform rationalization, and reduction of technical debt.
• Evaluate the health and maturity of automation ecosystems and implement improvements.
  
  

Stakeholder Alignment & Communication

• Represent the Intelligent Automation strategy confidently to senior leadership and cross-functional partners.
• Translate complex automation concepts into clear, business-friendly narratives.
• Collaborate with product, engineering, operations, and customer experience teams to align on enterprise needs.
  
  

Operational Excellence

• Govern best practices for RPA, NLP, workflow automation, and digital assistants.
• Ensure automation initiatives meet regulatory, compliance, and security requirements.
• Establish KPIs and performance dashboards that reflect platform stability and business impact.
  
  

Required Skills

Leadership & Team Scale

• Must have led 30+ engineers across a distributed onshore/offshore model.
• Experience in coaching, restructuring, talent development, and workforce optimization.
• Proven ability to stabilize and elevate performance in large automation organizations.
  
  

Technical Understanding (High-Level)

• Strong understanding of the RPA ecosystem (attended and unattended), but not hands-on and not a UiPath implementer profile.
• Experience with NLP systems and/or digital assistants (preferred, not required).
• Background in system-level architecture, modernization planning, and governance.
  
  

Enterprise Experience

• Proven ability to manage and optimize automation platforms within large, complex enterprises.
• Telecom, insurance, and financial services experience all acceptable.
• Experience managing multiple automation technologies across business units.
  
  

Communication

• Must be clear, articulate, confident, with strong executive presence.
• Able to represent automation strategy and platform modernization to senior leaders.
• Comfortable influencing in complex enterprise environments.
