Job summary

Department of City Planning (DCP) in New York City seeks a Chief of Mapping to lead the City Map Team and develop workflows for map maintenance and amendments. You will recruit and manage up to 6 engineers/planners, coordinate cross-team efforts, and ensure accurate, compliant mapping across City Map and Zoning Map projects.

The role requires strong managerial experience, expertise with surveying techniques, and a solid grasp of NYC land use review processes.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years of managerial experience supervising complex technical or operational teams.
• Experience making high-level decisions that impact workplans and processes.
• Ability to monitor and coordinate multiple highly technical projects simultaneously, meet strict deadlines and quickly respond to priorities.
• Strong attention to detail in research, analysis, and review of written materials and plans.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work with different personalities and roles.
• Experience coaching, motivating and managing a highly skilled team.
• Experience with land survey techniques and road design.
• Experience with NYC land use review processes is a plus.
• A valid New York State License as a Professional Engineer is a strong plus.

Responsibilities

• Assist in establishing workflows, procedures and standards for maintenance and amendment of the City Map.
• Recruit, coach and manage a team of up to 6 Engineers and City Planners.
• Coordinate activities with Mapping and Spatial Records teams to ensure City Map and Zoning Map operations.
• Consult with private surveyors, engineers, and lawyers regarding City Map maintenance and standards.
• Provide expert advice on City Map to applicants, department staff, and City agencies.
• Liaise with City Agencies and utilities interacting with the City Map.
• Oversee scanning and digitization of paper City Map materials into a unified digital map.
• Perform related tasks as needed.
