Job summary

Gusto in New York is seeking an Engineering Manager for AI Dev Tools to own the agentic coding platform end-to-end—from product bets to the underlying infrastructure. You will set autonomy and security guardrails, and manage vendor contracts as part of the team building this platform.

You will lead a group of senior engineers, recruit and grow talent, and partner with CTO, Infra, Security, and Legal on strategy and risk in a fast-changing AI landscape.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of engineering people leadership experience
• Direct, hands-on experience with agentic coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex)
• Experience owning a significant vendor or infrastructure contract
• Comfort making autonomy/risk tradeoff calls on AI systems without a dedicated security team
• Track record of leading through ambiguity across multiple domains
• Strong, direct communication with senior/executive stakeholders
• Self-driven, able to remove roadblocks and set direction

Responsibilities

• Own the agentic coding roadmap and architecture, including entry points and orchestration for multi-step agent work
• Oversee agentic code review roadmap, balancing quality, speed, and cost
• Set security and risk posture for autonomous coding agents, including sandboxing and permission scope
• Define AI infrastructure spend guardrails and justify costs
• Lead and grow a team of senior engineers, manage hiring and leveling
• Partner with engineering leadership on the future of AI-native software development at Gusto
